How to help your child prepare for school: first time in first grade

As responsible parents, you have probably already decided which school your child will attend and submitted all the necessary documents. Now is the time to prepare your future first-grader. A little preparation will help your child adapt to the new environment more quickly and reduce stress. We have put together some tips especially for you on how to prepare your child for an important event in their life — starting first grade.

How to prepare your child for school

To help a first-grader get used to school more quickly and ensure a smooth adaptation process, child psychologists advise:

Adhering to a daily routine

Start preparing your child for a change in their daily routine in advance. Find out the approximate schedule of a first-grader and try to stick to it. This will help the future student wake up easier in the morning, manage their time correctly, and get everything done.

Entrust household chores

Entrust your child with some household chores, such as watering flowers, taking care of a pet, or cleaning. These seemingly ordinary skills develop independence and responsibility. By the time they start school, your child should be able to make their bed, brush their teeth, and put clothes in the closet. Each year, feel free to expand this list and don't make excuses that your child is still too young.

Teach your child to sense time

A sand timer, kitchen timer, sports watch with a stopwatch, and various electronic devices will help you with this. This skill will teach your first-grader to manage time correctly, which will positively affect the effectiveness of their work.

Buy a nice backpack for the student

A backpack is an important and indispensable accessory for any first-grader. It should appeal to the child. Before buying, be sure to consult and choose models with their favorite characters. The Kite collection features stylish backpacks with cheerful My Little Pony, cute Hello Kitty, legendary Hot Wheels cars, fearless Paw Patrol puppies, almighty Transformers, and other interesting and cool designs.

Don't forget that a backpack for a first-grader must have an orthopedic back and soft, anatomically shaped shoulder straps that will preserve the health of the child's back and help in proper posture formation. The internal design is also important. You can find out how to choose a backpack here.

Teach them to pack their things independently

First, do it together with your child. Tell them what goes where. Then let them try to do it from a drawn diagram. At the same time, be sure to check what they have packed and what they have forgotten – give them a hint. And finally, trust the child to pack their bag or backpack independently without your checking: let them feel the consequences of their inattention. You'll see, it will only take a few times and the child will learn to pack their backpack independently.

Remember, this skill develops more slowly in boys. So be patient!

Equip a personal workspace

A child aged 4-5 should definitely have their own workspace. This is not a kitchen table or a bedside table. It's a full-fledged desk or writing table! You should also buy quality stationery that the child will like and that will spark their interest in writing and creativity. We have previously discussed what is included in a first-grader's kit. Having a personal workspace will teach the child to maintain order and awaken an interest in learning.

Support, support, and more support!

First grade is stressful not only for parents but also for the child themselves. Remember this and don't forget to support your little one daily. Tell them that they are the best and that they will definitely succeed in everything. When they come home, ask: how was their day, what new things did they learn, do they like everything. Such simple questions will help the child understand that they haven't been abandoned or sent to strangers, but that people are interested in them and care about them.

Of course, don't forget to praise your child. Especially when they try to do something, take responsibility, or do something independently. The effort is more important than the result!

Be a caring mom – love and support your child. And Kite will help with that! Be an original, be a cool mom for them!
