SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series produced by Nickelodeon, created by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg. In 2024, "SpongeBob" celebrates its 25th anniversary since the first episode aired and remains the longest-running project in the channel's history.
The History of SpongeBob SquarePants' Creation
Comic. The first ideas for the series were embodied in the educational comic "The Intertidal Zone." It was developed by marine science instructor and animator Stephen Hillenburg in 1989 for his students.
Series. In 1997, Hillenburg presented a seven-minute pilot to Nickelodeon. The official premiere of the series took place on July 17, 1999, and it has since been renewed for a 15th season.
Films. In 2004, after 3 successful seasons, Hillenburg released the first full-length animated film. It was supposed to be the series finale, but the success of the funny sea sponge exceeded expectations. In 2015, the second film based on the animated series, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," was released in cinemas, and in 2020, the third, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run," was released on Netflix.
The animated adventure comedy "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" is scheduled to premiere in December 2025. In the new film, the hero travels to the depths of the ocean to meet the ghost of the Flying Dutchman.
SpongeBob SquarePants Plot
The series tells the story of SpongeBob and his friends' adventures at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. They live in the fantastic underwater city of Bikini Bottom, where they work, play mischief, help others, and learn new things.
The main character is an enthusiastic and good-natured optimist who approaches life and problems with humor. Throughout the series, SpongeBob dreams of getting a boat driving license at Mrs. Puff's Boating School but constantly fails.
Among the ocean inhabitants are representatives of marine fauna: a sponge, a starfish, an octopus, crabs, plankton, a snail, a sperm whale, a pufferfish, and also unusual creatures such as a squirrel and a supercomputer.
Main Characters of SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob — an optimistic sea sponge with a naive and kind character, who lives in a pineapple house in Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook, loves catching jellyfish, and constantly gets into adventures.
Gary — SpongeBob's pet sea snail, who meows like a cat.
Patrick Star — a starfish, SpongeBob's best friend, friendly, but not very smart.
Squidward — a neighbor and coworker whom he despises. He has a difficult character and is constantly displeased with SpongeBob and Patrick's childish antics.
Mr. Krabs — the greedy owner of the "Krusty Krab," where SpongeBob works. He manages the restaurant like a true pirate on board and raises his daughter Pearl alone.
Plankton — a small, green, one-eyed copepod who, along with his computer wife Karen, owns the "Chum Bucket" restaurant. They envy the successful "Krusty Krab" and devise all sorts of unsuccessful schemes to get more customers.
Sandy Cheeks — a squirrel from Texas who wears a diving suit and lives under a glass dome to breathe freely underwater. She is a master of karate.
Mrs. Puff — a pufferfish who has incredible patience while teaching SpongeBob how to drive a boat, and when she gets angry, she inflates into a ball.

Kite products under the SpongeBob SquarePants license feature humorous poses of SpongeBob in square pants, fantastic sea depths, bubbles, and a mysterious city. The character adorns badges, keychains, stationery, and Kite textile products. SpongeBob will cheer up children, make school days brighter, and bring nostalgia to adults!
